Homeopathy

Homeopathy is a system of medical therapy that uses ultra dilute micro-doses of medicines, known as homeopathic remedies. The word "homeopathic" is derived from the Greek words homeos meaning "similar" and pathos meaning "disease" or "suffering."  Homeopathy literally means "to treat with a remedy that produces an effect similar to the disease or suffering."

Developed into a medical system in the early 1800’s by Samuel Hahnemann, homeopathy is well known today in Europe, Great Britain, India, and Australia.  The family doctor to England's Queen Elizabeth is a homeopathic physician

A homeopath chooses the proper remedy usingthe Law of Similars. This law states that "like cures like." The most familiar example of this is the onion.  When peeling  an onion, your eyes water, burn and itch, and your nose begins to run.  Therefore, if you suffer from an allergy or cold, where your eyes are itching, burning or watery, and your nose is running – a homeopath might select the remedy Allium cepa (onion) as the appropriate remedy.

Homeopathy does not treat diseases, but rather treats the individual who is sick, or has symptoms. Physical, mental and emotional components form an individual.  Symptoms represent a state of imbalance very specific to this individual. The homeopath works to identify the unique expression of symptoms of an individual and match that to the remedy with the most similar pattern of attributes.

Homeopathic Remedies

Homeopathic remedies are prepared from plant, mineral or animal substances.  The original substance is diluted in liquid repeatedly and vigorously shaken with each dilution.  These very small amounts can provide exceptionally strongly effects when used properly. Since the remedies are very diluted, they are extremely safe. Clinical experience of homeopathy clearly shows that the micro-dose is effective.  Since they work on infants and animals, the argument that such micro doses are no better than placebo is easily dismissed.

Working with a homeopath

An appointment with a homeopath will be different from your typical doctor visit.  You will be asked to give more than just a typical medical history.  You will be asked to give a description of your symptoms that include sensations, feelings, timing, and seemingly unrelated things such as energy, sleep habits, and the conditions in which you feel best and worst.  A thorough first appointment usually requires two to three hours.  The homeopath will also ask you to report back after taking a homeopathic remedy, and will adjust the timing of dose, or even change the suggested remedy depending on your individual reactions.  The consistency and accuracy of communication is central and vital in homeopathic treatment.

Working with a homeopath online

There are many advantages to working with a homeopath ‘face to face’.  An experienced homeopath will be adding observations to the basic information to give an even better base on which to determine the best homeopathic remedy.  However, face to face is not always practical or possible.  The advantage in online homeopathy is that you have more time to give your answers, consider, remember, and even let questions jog your memory.  The homeopath too has the advantage of being able to review notes, do research, and generally do a more thoughtful job in case management.  So – there are advantages and disadvantages.

The single most critical factor in achieving great results with homeopathy (in office and online) is good communication.  You must be comfortable in communicating.  Anything that you perceive as a barrier to good communication must be addressed early on and openly with the homeopath to ensure the best possible care.

Track Record

Homeopathy has decreased mortality by 10 to 30 times versus conventional medicine during epidemics  of diphtheria, scarlet fever, typhoid, cholera, yellow fever, and malaria.  During the Spanish Flu Epidemic of 1918-19, it has been estimated that 25 to 50 million people died world wide. In the United States alone, 550,000 died. Those treated with conventional medicine had a mortality of approximately 30% while those treated with homeopathic medicine had a mortality of less than 1%. (Journal of the American Institute of Homeopathy 1921; 13:1028-43).

Studies that prove the efficacy of homeopathy have been published in respected journals such as Lancet, Pediatrics, Rheumatology, Annals of Internal Medicine, etc.  For an abridged bibliography please see:

There are many skeptics concerning the efficacy of homeopathy – who consider it placebo or somehow based on the patients belief system.  These arguments are easily dismissed by the well documented evidence of effective use of homeopathic remedies on infants and animals – where healing was not based on any belief system.
